Prakashi Tomar is one of the oldest sharpshooters in the world. 80-year-old Tomar is a name that makes Johri Village of Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district proud. She can be described as an 'iconoclast' who has discovered the way for women to live with dignity in the male dominating society. Known for her shooting skills 'Dadi Prakashi Tomar' aka 'Revolver Dadi' has won many medal and trophies in various state and national level frays.
Moreover, she opted for the career in the age when most of the people think to give up. But it was not quite easy as it looks. When she started going shooting range at the age of 65 people, mostly male, trolled her and passed comments like, 'go and join the army' and 'go for Kargil' etc, but these could not ruin her will power. Putting aside the criticism she had focused on the target, which catapulted her to the helm of popularity and set an example for the society, critics and her coming generations. Now, her daughter Seema Tomar is an International champion and people in the village pronounce her name with pride and honour.

Biography
Mother of eight, Prakashi, has 15 grandchildren. She hails from the Johri village of West-Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district and it was only a coincidence when she first successfully shot the target. It's all begun in the year 2000 when her daughter Seema Tomar, presently a well-known name in the world of shooting even on the international platform, joined Johri Rifle club to learn shooting. Though Seema had a desire about the shooting but was hesitated to go alone, then Prakashi decided to encourage Seema and enrouted her to Academy.

This was the beginning of 'Revolver Dadi'.
In the academy, Prakashi shocked everyone including club coach Farooq Pathan, when she shot the target very skillfully just to show Seema that how to hold the gun. It was the first incident when the coach noticed Prakashi's tactics and advised her to join the range. It was the commencement of a new era for her but the path was full of obstacles. As she was a housewife so going daily to the range for practice was not possible then coach gave her option to come once in a week and rest of the week she continued to practice at home.
Since then, she is continuously scripting her success story.
Moreover, among her daughter, Seema Tomar became the first Indian woman to clinch a victory or medal at Shooting World Cup organised in 2010, while Dadi Prakashi Tomar won 25 championships across the country and bagged the gold medal in Veteran Shooting Championship in Chennai.
Not only this, the people, who initially made a joke of Prakashi now send their daughters to learn techniques of shooting at her range.
   
Family
Prakashi Tomar married to Jai Singh and her daughter Seema Tomar is an international shooter, in fact, she is the first Indian woman to win a shotgun silver at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup and now she has been commissioned in the Indian Army.
Prakashi’s granddaughter Ruby is deputed as an inspector in Punjab Police, while her second daughter Rekha was also a shooter but now she has given up. We can also say that Prakashi has passed this legacy to her third generation.

Achievements
During her career, she received many awards, medal and trophies, besides social honours and the Nari Shakti award conferred by then President of India Pranab Mukherjee tops the list. She was also facilitated with the 'Icon Lady' award by the ministry of Women and Children Development.
Besides, she had appeared as a guest on many TV shows like Bollywood star Amir Khan's 'Satyamev Jayate' and 'India's Got Talent'; Amir had also invited her for a private lunch. Now, many producers and directors are in touch with her and her family for a biopic on Dadi's life. If it happens then it would be an exemplary sports biopic.

लखनऊ पहुंची शूटर दादी, बताया कैसे एक छोटी घटना ने बदल दी जिंदगी

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय और राष्ट्रीय मीडिया के अलावा डिस्कवरी, नेशनल ज्योग्राफिक चैनल तक खास पहचान बनाने वाली शूटर दादी प्रकाशी तोमर ने कहा 20 साल पहले लोग उनकी निशानेबाजी को देखकर ताने देते थे। कहते थे कि ‘छोरियां अब बंदूक चलावे हैं। बुड्ढी का दिमाग खराब हवे है। कारगिल में लड़न के लिए भेज दें। बड्डी निशानची बने है।’ 

आज वही लोग अपनी बेटियों को निशानेबाजी सिखाने के लिए भेजते हैं। शूटर दादी यहां शनिवार को फिक्की के एक कार्यक्रम में शामिल होने के लिए लखनऊ आई हैं।

शुक्रवार को लखनऊ पहुंची 80 वर्षीय शूटर दादी से अमर उजाला को बताया कि गांव के जगवीर सिंह सबसे ज्यादा उनका और उनकी जेठानी चंद्रा तोमर का मजाक उड़ाया करते थे। अब खुद उनकी पोती रेशू सिंह शूटिंग में है। 

रेशू को उन्हीं ने शूटिंग रेंज में पिस्टल से निशाना लगाना सिखाया है। अब वह अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर खेल रही है। उन्हीं की तरह मजाक उड़ाने वालों में कालूराम भी थे। अब खुद की बेटी आशा राष्ट्रीय स्तर की प्रतियोगिताओं में भाग लेने जा रही है।

छोटी सी घटना ने बदली जिंदगी

    शूटर दादी का कहना है कि एक छोटी सी घटना ने पूरी जिंदगी बदल दी। बेटी सीमा और रूबी को निशानेबाजी सिखाने केलिए शूटिंग रेंज लेकर जाती थी। 

      एक दिन पिस्टल में छर्रा फंसा तो ऐसे ही निशाना लगा दिया। पिस्टल चल गई तो निशाना सही जगह लगा। कोच ने दोबारा से वैसा ही कराया। इसके बाद यह रोज का काम हो गया। प्रशिक्षण के बाद एक दिन दिल्ली में देश के जाने-माने निशानेबाज और आईपीएस अधिकारी धीरज सिंह को हरा दिया। 

     यह तब किया जबकि .32 बोर की पिस्टल पहली बार चलाई थी। अब दो दर्जन से ज्यादा राष्ट्रीय और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रतियोगिताएं जीतने के बाद जोहड़ी में लड़कियों को निशानेबाजी सिखाने में मदद कर रही हूं। उन्होंने कहा कि जब वह होती हैं तो लोग अपनी लड़कियों को निशानेबाजी सीखने के लिए भेजने में नहीं झिझकते हैं। 

तीसरी पीढ़ी भी निशानेबाजी में

दर्जनों पुरस्कार और प्रतियोगिताएं जीत चुकीं प्रकाशी तोमर और उनकी जेठानी के बाद अब उनकी तीसरी पीढ़ी निशानेबाजी के क्षेत्र में है। 

    प्रकाशी की बेटी सीमा जहां अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर की खिलाड़ी है, वहीं सेना में कमीशन पा चुकी है। पोतियां रूबी (पंजाब पुलिस में दरोगा), प्रीति, मोनिका और सोनिया भी निशानेबाजी में देश का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रही हैं। बेटी रेखा अब निशानेबाजी को छोड़ चुकी है। वहीं चंद्रो का पोता चिराग भी निशानेबाजी करता है।

जल्द बनेगी शूटर दादी पर फिल्म

कई निर्माता-निर्देशक दादी की बेटी सीमा के संपर्क में हैं। वह उनकी जिंदगी पर एक फिल्म बनाना चाहते हैं। इसके अलावा अंतर्राष्ट्रीय और राष्ट्रीय मीडिया के अलावा डिस्कवरी, नेशनल ज्योग्राफिक चैनल तक डॉक्यूमेंट्री भी बन चुकी हैं। राज्यपाल शूटिंग रेंज का उद्घाटन करने जोहड़ी गांव गए थे। 

अब लड़कियां बचाने के अभियान से जुड़ी

शूटर दादी ने बताया कि लड़कियों को प्रशिक्षण देने के अलावा अभी बेटी बचाओ-बेटी पढ़ाओ अभियान से जुड़ी हूं। इसके ऑडियो-वीडियो शूट हो चुके हैं। केंद्रीय महिला एवं बाल विकास मंत्रालय के 100 वीमेन अचीवर्स में शामिल और राष्ट्रपति के हाथों सम्मानित हो चुकीं प्रकाशी तोमर लड़कियों के लिए बन चुकीं रूढ़ियों को तोड़ने की कवायद में जुटी हैं।

On Women's Day, meet the gunslinger grannies who are inspiring a new crop of shooting stars in UP’s sugarcane belt

Amid miles of sugarcane shoots, trucks emerging from brick kilns and the odd bullock cart, you can easily miss the road to Johri, an inconspicuous village that connects the western Uttar Pradesh towns of Baghpat and Baraut. 

But in the last few years, politicians, sports scouts and journalists have been thronging the village to visit a shooting range made famous by a pair of grandma sharpshooters. "Tomar dadiyon ka gaon? Just drive four kilometres and take right," is the advice from one in a group of people waiting for a UP Roadways bus.

"Prakashi dadi is at the gher (barn)," says her grandson Gaurav Tomar, as he ushers us into a modest living room where a black-and- white picture of Sonia Gandhi with two pistol-wielding women clad in ghagras and shirts takes pride of place next to a handwritten note from actor Aamir Khan and hundreds of medals, mementoes and assorted memorabilia. 

We follow Tomar into the barn where four buffalos chewing on cud make nervous noises as they see journalists walk towards an elderly woman plastering cow-dung cakes onto a wall. She may have hit bullseye and helped change attitudes in Uttar Pradesh’s feudal villages with her shooting exploits, but back home 

Prakashi Tomar, 74, is just another country woman tending to buffaloes. "When the men are away working in the fields, women of the house have to look after the animals. I am not any different, beta," says Prakashi Tomar.

शूटर दादी तो आपको याद ही होगी, जिन्होंने नेशनल टीवी के रियलिटी शो ‘इंडिया गोट टैलेंट’ में धूम मचा दी थी. उत्तर प्रदेश के बागपत जिले से ताल्लुख रखने वाली दादी निशाना लगाने में माहिर है और अब वो युवतियों में आत्मनिर्भरता जगा रहीं हैं.

अनोखी मिसाल हैं दादी-

उम्र के जिस पड़ाव में इन्साद जिंदगी से हर मान लेता है उस उम्र में शूटर दादी निशानेबाजी करतीं हैं.

दादी भारत के सबसे बड़े रियलिटी शो का हिस्सा भी रह चुकीं हैं.

दुनिया की सबसे उम्रदराज़ 82 वर्षीया दादी का नाम प्रकाशी है.

उनकी ढलती उम्र और कमज़ोर शरीर भी उन्हें अचूक निशानेबाजी करने से रोक नहीं पाई.

60 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने निशानेबाजी सीखना शुरू किया था.

तब लोग उनके इस जज्बें का मजाक उड़ाते थे.

जब दादी निशानेबाजी सीखने शूटिंग रेंज जाती थी तप लोग कहते थे कि बुढ़िया इस उम्र में कारगिल जाएगी क्या.

लेकिन दादी ने इस सब बातों की परवाह किये बगैर निशानेबाजी सीखी.

आज दादी न केवल उत्तर प्रदेश बल्कि पूरे भारत ने अपना नाम रोशन कर चुकीं हैं.

दादी ने गोल्ड मैडल सहित कई पदक और पुरस्कार जीते हैं.

अब दादी युवतियों को शूटिंग सीखती है.

दादी इस समय लखनऊ में है और उन्हें एक निजी कार्यक्रम में सम्मानित किया जायेगा.
